Guide · Essen

Lipolysis or liposuction?

Can I have lipolysis on the abdomen?

For small pads yes; for the whole abdomen it is too laborious and expensive – liposuction makes more sense there.

Is the lipolysis result lasting?

Treated fat cells do not form anew. With stable weight the result lasts long; with weight gain remaining cells can grow. Full page: Lipolysis or liposuction?

Guide · Essen

Microneedling or PRP?

Does microneedling hurt?

With numbing cream it is quite bearable; it feels like fine sanding. Afterwards the skin feels like after a sunburn.

Is PRP without needling worthwhile for the skin?

For skin quality yes, but the effect is subtler. For scars the combination is clearly more effective. Full page: Microneedling or PRP?

Guide · Essen

Minoxidil or PRP?

Can I do PRP without minoxidil?

Yes, with a smaller effect. For patients who do not tolerate minoxidil or do not want to apply it daily, that is an option.

How long do I have to use minoxidil?

As long as the effect is wanted. On stopping, the gained hair falls out again within months. Full page: Minoxidil or PRP?

Guide · Essen

PRP or polynucleotides?

Can PRP and polynucleotides be combined?

Yes, increasingly so – for example PRP with needling across the face and polynucleotides under the eyes.

I have a fish allergy – are polynucleotides off limits?

The proteins are removed, reactions are not described; still, with a severe fish allergy PRP is preferred. Full page: PRP or polynucleotides?

Guide · Essen

Skin booster or meso?

Is mesotherapy the same as 'meso-Botox'?

No. 'Meso-Botox' means superficially spread low-dose botulinum toxin (Baby Botox); mesotherapy means vitamin cocktails without botulinum toxin.

What about meso for hair?

There are mesotherapy mixtures for the scalp; the evidence is weaker than for PRP and minoxidil. Full page: Skin booster or meso?

Guide · Essen

Dull skin.

How soon do I see an effect?

Care: after 6–8 weeks. Skin boosters: clearly after the second session. Microneedling: after 4–6 weeks per session.

Is one skin booster enough before an event?

A single session two to three weeks before gives a short-term freshness effect; the course lasts longer. Full page: Dull skin

Guide · Essen

Large pores.

Does Botox help with pores?

Superficially spread Baby Botox can improve sebum flow and pore appearance for two to three months. It is off-label and rather a supplement.

How many needling sessions do I need?

Three, four to six weeks apart; then yearly refresh depending on the skin. Full page: Large pores

Guide · Essen

Thin, dry skin.

Does hormone therapy help the skin?

Yes, studies show more collagen and skin thickness under hormone replacement therapy. But that decision is made with the gynaecologist for medical reasons – not for the skin.

How often do I have to come back?

After the course usually one session every six to nine months. Full page: Thin, dry skin

Guide · Essen

Cost of lipolysis.

Why not everything in one session?

Because the amount of deoxycholic acid per session is limited – more means more swelling and risk, not more result.

Is there a fixed price for the double chin?

No, flat rates are impermissible. You receive a cost plan with the expected number of sessions before the first session. Full page: Cost of lipolysis

Guide · Essen

Cost of microneedling.

Why does needling cost 80 euros at a beauty salon?

There it is done cosmetically with short needles, without dermal depth, without PRP and without a physician. It is a different procedure.

Can I have microneedling without PRP?

At VIVA DERM needling is usually combined with PRP because healing and result are better; on request it is planned individually. Full page: Cost of microneedling

Guide · Essen

Cost of polynucleotides.

Are polynucleotides more expensive than skin boosters?

No, the same per session. The course is similarly long.

Can I have the eye area and face in one session?

Yes, as two areas; the price adds up accordingly. Full page: Cost of polynucleotides

Guide · Essen

Cost of PRP hair.

Does insurance pay for PRP?

No, PRP for hair loss is a self-pay service – usually for privately insured patients too.

What if it does not work?

After three sessions photos are compared. If there is no effect, the therapy is not continued – that is discussed openly beforehand. Full page: Cost of PRP hair

Guide · Essen

Cost of skin boosters.

Is a single session worthwhile?

It brings a short-term freshness effect; the cumulative effect on elasticity only comes with the course.

Are there course prices?

No – package prices are impermissible for medical services. Each session is billed individually under the GOÄ. Full page: Cost of skin boosters

Guide · Essen

Acne scars.

How long am I red after microneedling?

One to three days like a sunburn, then mild flaking. Make-up from the second day.

Does microneedling also help with pigment spots after acne?

Partly, combined with sun protection and lightening agents. But the spots often fade on their own within a year. Full page: Acne scars

Guide · Essen

Collagen supplements.

Bovine, marine or porcine – which collagen?

Studies mostly used marine and bovine collagen; a relevant difference is not proven. Hydrolysis (peptides) and dose matter more.

Does collagen also help joints and hair?

For joints there are similarly small effects; for hair the evidence is largely missing. Full page: Collagen supplements

Guide · Essen

Hair loss men.

When should I start treating?

As early as possible if it bothers you – lost follicles do not come back. What still produces fuzz can be strengthened.

How often is PRP needed?

Build-up with three to four sessions four weeks apart, then every six to twelve months. Full page: Hair loss men

Guide · Essen

Hair loss women.

Hair loss after childbirth – do I need to do something?

Mostly not. Postpartum effluvium begins two to four months after birth and settles within a year. Have iron and thyroid checked.

Is PRP useful for diffuse hair loss too?

Only after the cause has been excluded and treated. As long as iron deficiency persists, little regrows even with PRP. Full page: Hair loss women

Guide · Essen

How the face ages.

Why is the nasolabial fold not filled directly?

Because it is mostly a consequence of volume loss in the cheek. Supporting the cheek lifts the fold – more natural than a bulge in the fold itself.

When should one start?

When something bothers you. Preventively sensible are sun protection and care, from the mid-30s possibly botulinum toxin for deep expression lines. There is no age at which you 'must'. Full page: How the face ages

Guide · Essen

Using retinol.

How long until I see something?

Smoother texture after 8–12 weeks, fine lines and spots after 3–6 months. Retinol is a long-term therapy.

Retinol or bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is milder and in small studies similarly effective against fine lines; the data are much thinner though. An option for pregnant women, otherwise retinol. Full page: Using retinol

Guide · Essen

Home devices.

Which LED mask is good?

One that states wavelengths (red ~630 nm, near-infrared ~830 nm) and irradiance; medical-device certification is a plus. Price alone says little.

Can I use LED after microneedling or fillers?

After microneedling yes, even helpful for healing. After fillers light is unproblematic; heat and pressure should be avoided in the first week. Full page: Home devices

Guide · Essen

Menopause and skin.

Should I wait with treatments until after menopause?

No. Precisely in this phase, skin-quality care preserves structure that would otherwise be lost faster.

Does hormone replacement help the skin?

Studies show thicker, better-hydrated skin under oestrogen – but that is not enough as the sole reason for therapy; gynaecology decides. Full page: Menopause and skin

Guide · Essen

Neck & décolleté.

Can horizontal neck lines be treated with Botox?

Only to a limited extent. Horizontal lines are static; botulinum toxin relaxes the platysma pull but does not smooth the line. Skin boosters and care are more sensible here.

Does hyaluronic acid help with décolleté lines?

As a skin booster (thin, spread over the area) yes. As a classic filler into the individual line rather not – it shows. Full page: Neck & décolleté

Guide · Essen

Nutrition and skin.

Does cutting sugar help visibly?

Existing AGEs remain, fewer new ones form. This shows slowly – over months, usually as a more even complexion.

Which supplement makes sense?

Only with a proven deficiency. Blood values instead of gut feeling. Full page: Nutrition and skin

Guide · Essen

Pigment spots.

Why does my melasma come back every summer?

Because UV light and heat reactivate the pigment cells. Consistent protection and maintenance agents reduce relapses but do not reliably prevent them.

Can I treat pigment spots with microneedling?

For marks after acne and mild melasma as a supplement yes, cautiously and in winter. Not for active, inflammatory melasma. Full page: Pigment spots

Guide · Essen

Rosacea.

Does Botox help with the redness?

In low, spread-out dose this is being studied and described in case series; it is off-label and not standard. Ask about it in the consultation.

I have visible vessels on my nose – what helps?

Vascular laser or IPL in dermatological hands. That is not a VIVA DERM service; we are happy to refer. Full page: Rosacea

Guide · Essen

Skin cancer screening.

Does VIVA DERM do skin cancer screening?

No. That belongs with dermatology or a GP with screening qualification. We refer for conspicuous marks.

May I have a mole treated with filler or needling?

No. Unclear pigmented marks are not injected or needled over. Dermatological assessment first, then aesthetics. Full page: Skin cancer screening

Guide · Essen

Skincare.

Retinol or tretinoin?

Tretinoin is stronger and prescription-only; retinol is milder and over the counter. Retinol 0.3 % is enough to start.

Can I combine retinol and vitamin C?

Yes – vitamin C in the morning, retinol in the evening. Applied together they tend to irritate.

Do I need an eye cream?

Not necessarily. Facial care may go up to the eye edge; sun protection and sleep matter more. Full page: Skincare

Guide · Essen

Sleep and skin.

Does Botox help with sleep lines?

Hardly, because they arise from pressure, not muscles. Back sleeping, silk pillowcase and skin boosters make more sense.

What about night creams?

Useful if they contain retinoids or humectants; the term 'night cream' alone means nothing. Full page: Sleep and skin

Guide · Essen

Smoking and skin.

Does this apply to e-cigarettes too?

Nicotine constricts vessels regardless of source; the additional combustion products are absent. Less harmful, not harmless.

Does Botox help with smoker's lines?

For fine lip lines the dose is very limited because mouth closure must be preserved. Skin boosters and skin-quality treatments are often more sensible here. Full page: Smoking and skin

Guide · Essen

Stress & skin.

Can Botox help with stress lines?

It relaxes the muscle that forms the frown line – the line becomes shallower, the tension itself remains. Some find it a relief because frowning as a reflex disappears.

I grind my teeth at night – what to do?

First see a dentist (splint, rule out tooth damage). Botulinum toxin in the chewing muscle can reduce the force of grinding; the two complement each other. Full page: Stress & skin

Guide · Essen

Sun protection.

Is make-up with SPF enough?

No. The amount is too small and UVA protection is usually missing. Sunscreen underneath, make-up on top.

Mineral or chemical?

Both work. Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are often better tolerated by sensitive skin; what matters is that you use the cream every day.

Does sunscreen block vitamin D?

In practice hardly, because it is never applied perfectly. With a proven deficiency, supplementing makes more sense than sunburn. Full page: Sun protection

Guide · Essen

Drips: hype or benefit?

Does a drip help with a hangover?

Fluid and electrolytes ease dehydration – a litre of water with salt does that too. Vitamins change nothing about the hangover.

How often may one have infusions?

With an indication, per medical plan. Without indication: not at all, or rarely – weekly drips without deficiency cannot be justified medically. Full page: Drips: hype or benefit?

Guide · Essen

Face after weight loss.

Can I have fillers while still losing weight?

Possible but not advisable – the result changes with further loss. Better wait until the target weight is reached.

Does the volume come back if I regain weight?

Partly. Facial fat follows body weight; the skin, however, recovers only to a limited extent. Yo-yo effects burden the skin particularly. Full page: Face after weight loss

Guide · Essen

Winter skin.

Is hyaluronic cream useful in winter?

Yes, but under an occlusive cream, otherwise it draws water out of the skin.

When should I start a microneedling series?

Ideally in October or November; three sessions four to six weeks apart are finished by spring. Full page: Winter skin

Treatment · Essen

Infusion therapy.

How long does an infusion take?

About 30 to 45 minutes depending on the composition. Allow a little more time overall for the consultation and preparation.

How often is it given?

A course of four sessions is common. Whether that makes sense for you, and at what intervals, is discussed individually.

Who is infusion therapy not suitable for?

Among others during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with cancer, and with advanced kidney insufficiency. Suitability is assessed medically beforehand.

Does health insurance pay?

No, this is a self-paid service invoiced according to the GOÄ.

Can I work or drive afterwards?

Usually yes. Drink enough on the day of treatment and avoid intensive sport. Full page: Infusion therapy

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Androgenetic alopecia.

Is PRP an alternative to minoxidil?

More of a complement. Many combine both; the decision depends on extent and tolerance.

Does PRP help receding temples?

Only if active follicles remain there. Not on smooth skin without fluff. Full page: Androgenetic alopecia

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Topical anaesthetic cream.

Is the treatment painless then?

Much more comfortable, but a feeling of pressure remains; 'painless' would be a promise we do not make.

Do I have to come earlier?

Yes, about 30 minutes before the actual treatment so the cream can take effect. Full page: Topical anaesthetic cream

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Deoxycholic acid.

Is deoxycholic acid dangerous?

Not at the licensed dose and with correct injection into fat tissue. Placement is decisive – hence physicians only.

Why does it swell so much?

The inflammatory reaction is the mechanism by which the fat cells are broken down. Full page: Deoxycholic acid

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Elastin.

Can elastin be applied to the skin?

Creams with elastin stay on the surface; the molecules are too large to penetrate.

Why does neck skin crinkle earlier?

Thin, often unprotected skin with few sebaceous glands – elastosis shows here first. Full page: Elastin

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Hair cycle.

Why don't I see anything right after PRP?

Because new hairs only regrow after the resting phase; the cycle cannot be accelerated.

Am I losing more hair than normal?

More than 100 a day over weeks, visibly thinner areas or a widening parting are reasons for a work-up. Full page: Hair cycle

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Bruise (haematoma).

Can I go to work with a bruise?

Yes. From the second day it can be covered with make-up.

Is a bruise a sign of a mistake?

No. It results from a vessel injury by the needle and can accompany even the most careful treatment. Full page: Bruise (haematoma)

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Skin ageing.

Can skin ageing be stopped?

Slowed yes – above all through sun protection and not smoking. Stopped no.

Which cream really works?

Proven are sun protection, retinoids and vitamin C. Everything else is care, not anti-ageing. Full page: Skin ageing

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Injection lipolysis.

Is it an alternative to liposuction?

For small areas yes, for large ones no. Liposuction removes far more volume in one session.

Does the fat come back?

Treated cells do not regrow. With weight gain, remaining fat cells can enlarge again. Full page: Injection lipolysis

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Collagen.

Do collagen drinks help?

The evidence shows at most small effects on hydration and elasticity. Sun protection works more reliably.

How quickly does new collagen form?

After a stimulus over about four to twelve weeks; that is why the effect of microneedling shows with a delay. Full page: Collagen

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Mesotherapy.

Is a skin booster the same as mesotherapy?

Technically similar, but with a standardised, licensed product instead of an individual cocktail.

Why don't you offer mesotherapy?

Because the alternatives reach the same goal with better-proven safety. Full page: Mesotherapy

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Microneedling.

Microneedling or skin booster?

Microneedling stimulates the skin mechanically, skin boosters add hydration. For scars and pores microneedling is the choice, for dry skin the skin booster.

When can I wear make-up again?

Usually after 24 hours. Full page: Microneedling

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Micronutrients.

Does a vitamin infusion make you more beautiful?

An existing deficiency can affect skin and hair; without deficiency there is no proven effect.

Do I need blood tests first?

Yes, sensibly – they decide whether and which infusion is an option at all. Full page: Micronutrients

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Photoaging.

Is SPF in a day cream enough?

Usually not: the amount applied is too small and many day creams lack full UVA protection.

Does sun protection still help at 50?

Yes. The skin keeps repairing minor damage when new damage stops; studies show improvements after just one year. Full page: Photoaging

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Polynucleotides.

Is it the same as a skin booster?

No. Skin boosters bind water (hyaluronic acid); polynucleotides are meant to stimulate cell regeneration. Both target skin quality.

Can I have it with a fish allergy?

Please mention it beforehand. The products are highly purified, but the decision is made case by case. Full page: Polynucleotides

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

PRP (platelet-rich plasma).

Does PRP hurt?

The blood draw is like at your GP; the injections are well tolerated with anaesthetic cream.

Does PRP help with every kind of hair loss?

No. It works best for early hereditary hair loss with active follicles. The cause should be clarified first. Full page: PRP (platelet-rich plasma)

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Skin booster.

Skin booster or filler?

Skin boosters for skin quality and hydration, fillers for volume and contours. They often complement each other.

How quickly do you see something?

First improvements after one to two weeks; the full effect after the second or third session. Full page: Skin booster

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Static lines.

Why didn't Botox remove my line?

Because it has become static. Botulinum toxin stops the movement but does not fill the written-in line.

Which treatment first?

Usually botulinum toxin first against the movement, assessment after two weeks, then volume if needed. Full page: Static lines

Lexicon · aesthetic medicine

Growth factors.

Are they hormones?

No. Growth factors act locally in tissue, not via the bloodstream like hormones.

How long do they act after PRP?

Release takes days; the regeneration triggered develops over weeks. Full page: Growth factors

Skin quality · regeneration

Microneedling.

How many sessions are needed?

It depends on the findings. Three to four sessions about four weeks apart are usual, followed by a fresh medical assessment.

What does combining it with PRP add?

PRP uses components from your own blood. Whether the combination makes sense in your case is discussed after examination; a guaranteed effect cannot be promised.

Who should not have this treatment?

Among others people with active skin infections, inflammatory acne in the area, impaired wound healing, a tendency to keloid scars, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Full page: Microneedling

PRP · skin quality

PRP face.

What is the difference to skin boosters?

Skin boosters are hyaluronic acid products that bind moisture. PRP comes from your own body and relies on growth factors. Both target skin quality; the choice depends on your skin and goal.

How many sessions make sense?

Usually three about four weeks apart, then maintenance after medical assessment.

Can PRP be combined with other treatments?

Yes, often with microneedling; also with botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid on other dates. This is planned individually.

Is PRP also suitable for the scalp?

Yes, PRP for hair loss is a separate treatment – see the PRP for hair page. Full page: PRP face

Treatment · Essen

PRP for hair.

Who is PRP for hair loss suitable for?

That can only be said after a history and examination. The cause and stage of the hair loss matter, as do previous illnesses and medication. In some cases further work-up comes first.

Does it hurt?

The injections use very fine needles. The scalp is sensitive, but most people describe a brief pinch. Tell us if you are very sensitive to pain.

Can I go back to work straight away?

Usually yes. The scalp may be red for a short while. Avoid sport, sauna and swimming pools for a few days.

Does health insurance cover it?

No, this is a self-paid service, invoiced according to the German scale of fees for physicians (GOÄ). Full page: PRP for hair
