Stress and skin.
Stress shows. Not only on the forehead but in the skin barrier, wound healing and collagen formation. An overview of the mechanisms – and the limits of aesthetics.

Chronic stress ages the skin faster, deepens lines through tension and teeth grinding and worsens acne. What is behind it and what helps.
What cortisol does to the skin.
Cortisol, the central stress hormone, inhibits collagen formation, weakens the skin barrier and slows wound healing. Chronically raised levels measurably accelerate skin ageing – studies show thinner skin and more fine lines in people under constant stress.
Tension becomes a line: when tense, we frown, pull the brows together and clench the jaw. The frown line and a squared jaw from thickened chewing muscles are often stress markers more than signs of age. Teeth grinding (bruxism) increases markedly in demanding phases.
Acne and redness: stress raises sebum production via androgens and promotes inflammation. Flare-ups of acne, rosacea or eczema often coincide with exam or project phases.
Sleep and behaviour: stress shortens sleep, increases alcohol, sugar and nicotine intake and makes the skincare routine slip – four indirect ways it burdens the skin.
What helps: the cause cannot be treated aesthetically. But the visible consequences can be softened: botulinum toxin relaxes the frown line and the chewing muscle (also for bruxism), skin boosters strengthen dried-out skin. For persistent exhaustion, sleep disorders or low mood, the GP or psychotherapeutic counselling is the right path – not the needle.
The essentials.

Frequently asked questions.
Can Botox help with stress lines?
It relaxes the muscle that forms the frown line – the line becomes shallower, the tension itself remains. Some find it a relief because frowning as a reflex disappears.
I grind my teeth at night – what to do?
First see a dentist (splint, rule out tooth damage). Botulinum toxin in the chewing muscle can reduce the force of grinding; the two complement each other.
