Microneedling in the lexicon: how it works, needle depths, difference to home dermarollers, combination with PRP, sessions
A closer look.
In medical microneedling a device with very fine, oscillating needles moves across the skin and creates thousands of tiny channels at a defined depth (usually 0.5 to 2 mm). The body reacts with wound healing: growth factors are released, fibroblasts form new collagen and elastin. The surface stays largely intact, so downtime is short.
Uses are acne scars, enlarged pores, fine lines, uneven texture and stretch marks. Combining it with PRP uses the freshly opened channels to introduce platelet-rich plasma. Three to four sessions four weeks apart are usually sensible.
Home dermarollers work at a shallow depth and carry an infection risk if used unhygienically. Risks of the medical treatment: redness for one to two days, rarely infection, pigment changes in darker skin types or without sun protection, reactivation of cold sores. Not suitable with active acne, impaired wound healing or a tendency to keloids.
