Pregnancy & breastfeeding: what is possible, what is not.

In short: botulinum toxin, hyaluronic acid, PRP and injection lipolysis are not carried out during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Not because harm is proven – but because it cannot be ruled out.

In short

Why aesthetic injections are not carried out during pregnancy and breastfeeding, what the evidence says, alternatives and when treatment is possible again.

Safety

Why we wait.

The evidence is the reason. For none of the aesthetic injection treatments are there studies in pregnant or breastfeeding women – and for ethical reasons there never will be. Manufacturers exclude these periods in their product information. Without data, no treatment; that is not caution on principle but a physician's duty of care.

Botulinum toxin: the substance acts locally on the muscle, and no harm is known from accidental treatments in early pregnancy. That is reassuring if it has already happened – but no reason to do it deliberately.

Hyaluronic acid: hormonal changes in pregnancy alter water retention, swelling tendency and skin circulation. Results are less predictable, and safety data are lacking here too.

What is possible: a consultation – gladly during pregnancy, to plan ahead. Consistent sun protection, gentle skin care. And the time after weaning: then all treatments are possible again; a gap of a few weeks after weaning is usual.

When trying to conceive: treatment is possible as long as there is no pregnancy. Anyone actively trying should discuss timing with the physician; after a treatment carried out unaware of an early pregnancy there is, on current knowledge, no reason to panic – please just get in touch.
