Drooping mouth corners.

A small muscle and a little lost volume are enough to make a mouth look 'sad'. Both can be treated specifically – with small amounts.

Drooping mouth corners
In short

Downturned mouth corners make a face look sad or dissatisfied. Causes (muscle pull, volume loss, marionette lines) and treatments: botulinum toxin into the…

Concern

What is behind it.

What is behind it: the depressor anguli oris muscle pulls the mouth corners down – in some people constantly. Add volume loss in the chin and mouth-corner area and the marionette lines running from mouth corner to chin. Together they create the impression of a dissatisfied or tired mouth, even at rest.

What helps: a few units of botulinum toxin into the depressor remove the downward pull – the mouth corners lift slightly. Hyaluronic acid supports mouth corners and chin and cushions the marionette lines. Often the combination is most natural: relaxation first, then a small volume correction.

What it cannot do: lift strongly slackened jowls – that needs cheek support or a surgical lift. And: too much hyaluronic acid at the mouth corner looks heavy, not cheerful.

Special note: the depressor treatment is dose-sensitive; too much can affect smiling or speaking. Hence start small and check after two weeks.

For whom

Is this for me?

A treatment can make sense if …

  • your mouth corners point down at rest
  • you are asked whether something is wrong
  • marionette lines from mouth corner to chin are visible
  • chin and mouth corners look hollow

Rather not suitable if …

  • the jowls are very pronounced (rather surgery)
  • you have swallowing or speech disorders
  • you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • you want a markedly 'pulled-up' smile (unnatural)
