Why Botox for 99 euros and fillers from the internet are dangerous: counterfeits, dilution, no licence, treatment without a physician.
What is behind the price.
What a product costs: one vial of botulinum toxin from a licensed manufacturer costs the practice a three-figure sum via the pharmacy; one millilitre of branded hyaluronic acid likewise. Add physician time, consent talk, follow-up, emergency equipment and insurance. A price well below market level means savings were made at one of these points – usually on the product or on the person injecting.
Counterfeits: customs seize counterfeit botulinum toxin products and fillers from online trade and the grey market every year. They contain wrong doses, contaminants or no active substance at all. Unlicensed products cannot be dissolved and have led to serious complications. Licensed products in Germany are obtained only via pharmacies on prescription.
Dilution and under-dosing: 'Botox from 99 euros' often means a few units that barely work – the customer returns for a 'top-up' and ends up paying more. Reputable practices name units or millilitres and the product.
Who injects? Botulinum toxin is prescription-only and may only be used by physicians. Beauty salons, 'injectors' and home visits break the law – and in an emergency have no hyaluronidase, no training and no liability insurance.
How to spot dubious offers: prices 'per zone' without product, discounts and package prices (impermissible for medical services), before-and-after advertising, booking without a consent talk, treatment in flats or studios, products from abroad 'at cost'.
What is fair: prices by GOÄ, written cost plan, product and amount on the invoice, check-up included. That costs more than 99 euros – and is the cheaper option once complications are counted.
