Premature skin ageing from UV radiation: pigment spots, elastosis, deep lines and coarse texture. The biggest single factor in visible ageing – and the most avoidable.

## A closer look.

UVB radiation causes sunburn and DNA damage in the epidermis; UVA penetrates deeper, generates free radicals and destroys collagen and elastin in the dermis – also through window glass and under cloud. Over years this adds up to photoaging: pigment spots, yellowish leathery skin, coarse pores, crinkle lines and dilated vessels.

Sun protection is therefore the most effective anti-ageing measure of all. SPF 30 blocks about 97 % of UVB, SPF 50 about 98 % – what matters is broad-spectrum protection (UVA seal), sufficient amount (two finger-lengths for the face) and daily use, not only on holiday. Antioxidants such as vitamin C complement the protection.

Existing sun damage can be partly softened: retinoids renew the epidermis, microneedling, PRP and polynucleotides stimulate the dermis, skin boosters improve hydration and elasticity. Pigment spots and vessels are a matter for dermatology with laser or light – we refer for that.

## At a glance.

- **UVA:** deep, collagen breakdown, also through glass
- **UVB:** sunburn, DNA damage
- **SPF 30 vs. 50:** 97 % vs. 98 % UVB
- **Amount for face:** two finger-lengths

## Frequently asked questions.

**Is SPF in a day cream enough?**

Usually not: the amount applied is too small and many day creams lack full UVA protection.

**Does sun protection still help at 50?**

Yes. The skin keeps repairing minor damage when new damage stops; studies show improvements after just one year.
