Excessive underarm sweating is a real everyday burden for many people. Botulinum toxin can temporarily reduce the activity of the sweat glands in the treated area.

## How the treatment works.

With **primary hyperhidrosis** the body sweats regardless of temperature or effort. The underarms, hands or feet are often affected.

Botulinum toxin type A temporarily blocks signal transmission to the sweat glands in the treated area. Sweating elsewhere is unchanged, and temperature regulation is not impaired.

The effect begins after a few days and typically lasts **4 to 6 months**, sometimes longer. Before treatment, other causes should be ruled out.

## The treatment in numbers.

- **Duration:** approx. 30 minutes
- **Onset:** after a few days
- **Lasts:** approx. 4–6 months
- **Price:** from €500

## Who it is for – and who it is not for.

**A good fit if …**
- expression lines that remain visible at rest (frown lines, forehead, crow's feet)
- healthy adults from 18 with realistic expectations
- medical reasons such as teeth grinding, heavy sweating or chronic migraine – after diagnosis

**Rather not if …**
- pregnancy or breastfeeding
- certain neuromuscular conditions or an infection in the treatment area
- a wish for volume or smoothing of deep static lines – hyaluronic acid is the better fit

The final assessment is made in the medical examination.

## How it works.

**1. Work-up.** We talk about onset, triggers and previous treatments, and about possible other causes.

**2. Mapping.** The affected area is defined, made visible with a test if needed.

**3. Injections.** Many small wheals are placed just under the skin with very fine needles.

**4. Afterwards.** No sport or sauna on the day of treatment. The effect builds over a few days.

## What you should know.

Redness, swelling, tenderness or small bruises at the injection sites are possible, as are temporary headaches. Rarely, neighbouring muscles can be temporarily weakened – a drooping eyelid, for example – which resolves as the substance is broken down. The treatment is not suitable with certain neuromuscular conditions, infections in the treatment area, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding, among others. Botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine and is only used by a physician after examination and assessment of the indication. This information does not replace the medical consultation required by German law (§ 630e BGB).

## Frequently asked questions.

**Will I sweat more elsewhere?**

The treatment acts locally in the injected area. Increased sweating elsewhere is not expected.

**Does insurance cover it?**

With medically justified hyperhidrosis, coverage is possible in individual cases. Clarify this with your insurer in advance.

**How long does it last?**

Typically 4 to 6 months, longer for some people. The treatment can then be repeated.

**Is it painful?**

There are many small injections, usually described as well tolerable. Numbing cream can be used on request.
