'Beauty sleep' is not a figure of speech but physiology. What the skin does at night, what it lacks when sleep is lacking – and where the limits of cosmetics lie.

## The skin's night shift.

**Repair during sleep:** in the deep-sleep phases of the first half of the night the body releases growth hormone, cell division in the epidermis is up to three times higher than during the day, and fibroblasts form collagen. At the same time the stress hormone cortisol, which breaks down collagen, falls. Sleep is therefore the time when daytime damage – above all from UV light – is repaired.

**What lack of sleep makes visible:** after a night with under five hours of sleep, water loss through the skin rises, the barrier recovers more slowly, cortisol stays elevated. A Swedish study showed that sleep-deprived people are rated by strangers as less healthy and less attractive – drooping lids, swollen eyes, paler skin, more fine lines.

**Dark circles and puffiness:** lying down and sluggish lymph let fluid pool in the lower lid by morning; little sleep amplifies it. Cooling, gentle outward massage and a raised head end help. Dark rings from thin skin and the shadow of the tear trough remain – here hyaluronic acid can smooth the transition.

**Sleep lines:** anyone who lies on the same side every night presses cheek and forehead into the same crease year after year – vertical lines on the cheek and décolleté that are clearer in the morning. Sleeping on the back, a silk or satin pillowcase and skin boosters for elasticity work better here than botulinum toxin, because these lines are not expression lines.

**Realistically:** seven to nine hours, regular times, a dark cool room, no screen in the last hour, evening care with a retinoid – that is how the skin uses the night. What the night does not do: replace volume, smooth deep lines. There are treatments for that; but they too last longer on well-rested skin.

## The essentials.

- **Cell division at night:** up to 3× higher
- **Critical:** < 5 h of sleep
- **Sleep lines:** side sleeping, not expression
- **Recommendation:** 7–9 h, regular

## Frequently asked questions.

**Does Botox help with sleep lines?**

Hardly, because they arise from pressure, not muscles. Back sleeping, silk pillowcase and skin boosters make more sense.

**What about night creams?**

Useful if they contain retinoids or humectants; the term 'night cream' alone means nothing.
