Between six and eighteen months – depending on the area, material and metabolism. Why the range is so wide and what can be influenced.

## What determines the duration.

**The area is the most important factor.** Where there is a lot of movement, hyaluronic acid is broken down faster: **lips** usually 6–9 months, **nasolabial and marionette lines** 6–12 months. Where the material sits deep on the bone and moves little, it lasts longer: **cheeks, chin, jawline** often 9–18 months. The **tear trough** is a special case – small amounts there often last 12 months and more.

**The material:** more strongly cross-linked, firmer hyaluronic acids last longer than soft ones. That is why different products are used for structure than for lips or fine lines. The physician chooses by area and goal.

**The person:** metabolism, a lot of sport, smoking, strong facial movement and the number of previous treatments all play a part. Patients often report that the second and third treatment last longer than the first – some material remains and the tissue is supported.

**What 'gone' means:** hyaluronic acid is not broken down abruptly but over months. Often some is still present after the stated time, but the visible effect fades. That is why a top-up usually needs less material than the first time.

**Topping up too early is not sensible:** layered treatments without assessment lead to over-correction. What makes sense is a check-up when the effect noticeably fades – then it is decided whether and how much.

## The essentials.

- **Lips:** usually 6–9 months
- **Nasolabial / marionette:** usually 6–12 months
- **Cheeks / chin / jawline:** usually 9–18 months
- **Tear trough:** often 12+ months

## Frequently asked questions.

**Why does it last less time for me?**

Metabolism, movement in the area, choice of material and whether it is your first treatment: the first often lasts a little less than later ones.

**Can I extend the durability?**

To a limited extent: sun protection, not smoking, no excessive endurance sport right after treatment. Area and material have the biggest influence.

**What happens if I don't top up?**

The material is broken down completely; the area then looks as it did before. The treatment does not cause 'stretching'.

**Is 'permanent' better?**

Permanent fillers are not used here. They cannot be dissolved, do not age with the face, and carry a higher complication risk.
