# Wide *lower face.*

> A wide jaw can be bone, muscle or fat – and only one of them can be treated with an injection. How to recognise the cause, what masseter Botox achieves

'My face is too square.' Before treating, it must be clear what makes the width – bone, muscle or fat. The answer decides everything.

## What is behind it.

**The test:** clench your teeth firmly and feel the jaw angle. If a hard muscle bulges out, the masseter is involved – the most common cause, often from teeth grinding. If it stays soft, it is fat (jowls, double chin) or the bone itself. Bone can only be changed surgically.

**Masseter Botox:** relaxes the chewing muscle, which shrinks over three to six months; the lower face becomes narrower, the shape more oval. Grinding eases as well. Two to three treatments in the first year, then usually less often. Not suitable for a narrow face – then it looks hollow.

**Fat:** jowls and double chin widen the lower face visually; injection lipolysis can reduce small deposits. For larger amounts liposuction is more effective.

**Proportion instead of reduction:** sometimes a face looks wide because chin or mid-face lack projection. One millilitre of hyaluronic acid at the chin can make the shape appear narrower without removing anything.

## Is this for me?

**A treatment can make sense if …**
- the chewing muscle visibly bulges when clenching
- you grind or clench your teeth
- the face looks wider below than above
- you want a more oval shape

**Rather not suitable if …**
- the width comes from the jaw bone (surgical only)
- your face is narrow overall (masseter Botox then looks hollow)
- you have swallowing or chewing problems
- you expect a markedly different face

These notes replace no examination. Whether and which treatment is an option is clarified in the consultation under § 630e BGB – sometimes the answer is: none.

## The essentials.

- **Test:** clench teeth, feel
- **Muscle:** masseter Botox, from €400
- **Fat:** lipolysis
- **Bone:** surgical only

## Important note.

This text is general information. It replaces neither a medical examination nor the consultation required before any treatment under German law (§ 630e BGB). Whether and which treatment is suitable for you can only be said after examination and consultation. No treatment results are promised.

## Frequently asked questions.

**How long until the face looks narrower?**

First change after four to six weeks, clearly after three months. The muscle needs time to shrink.

**Does the width come back?**

Without follow-up yes, slowly over months. With regular treatment the gaps get longer.
