A technical question patients rarely ask – and one that says a lot about safety. Both have their place; what matters is that the physician masters both.

## Sharp or blunt.

**The needle** is sharp and short. It allows very precise, pinpoint deposits – ideal for small amounts at defined spots: lip contour, chin tip, single scars, superficial lines. But every puncture can hit a vessel: more bruising, and in an unlucky position a higher risk of injecting into a vessel.

**The cannula** is blunt, flexible and longer. It is inserted through a single entry point and pushes vessels and nerves aside instead of piercing them. Studies show clearly less bruising and a lower risk of vascular occlusion – especially in cheek, tear trough, nasolabial fold, jawline and lip body. Less precise for tiny deposits.

**In practice:** for volume and spread-out treatments mostly cannula; for contour and fine work needle; often both in one session. With botulinum toxin, skin boosters and PRP very fine needles are used – the cannula plays no role there.

**What you may ask:** 'Do you work with a cannula?' A practice that works only with needles in high-risk areas (nose, forehead, glabella, tear trough) should be able to justify that. And: no technique makes consent, anatomical knowledge and hyaluronidase in stock superfluous.

## At a glance.

| Criterion | Needle | Cannula |
|---|---|---|
| Tip | sharp | blunt |
| Punctures | many | one or two |
| Bruising | more frequent | less frequent |
| Vascular occlusion | higher risk | lower risk |
| Precision | very high | high, less pinpoint |
| Typical for | lip contour, chin, scars | cheek, tear trough, nasolabial, jawline |
| Pain | brief, repeated | pressure, once |
| Botulinum toxin | fine needle | not used |

Simplified comparison. Which method suits you follows only from examination and consultation. Prices are guide values under the GOÄ; the individual amount is stated in writing before treatment.

## The essentials.

- **Needle:** precise, more bruising
- **Cannula:** safer in risk areas
- **Practice:** usually both combined
- **Asking:** allowed and sensible

## Important note.

This text is general information. It replaces neither a medical examination nor the consultation required before any treatment under German law (§ 630e BGB). Whether and which treatment is suitable for you can only be said after examination and consultation. No treatment results are promised.

## Frequently asked questions.

**Does the cannula hurt more?**

Differently: instead of several pricks you feel a pressure or pulling sensation under the skin. Most find it more comfortable.

**Is the cannula always safer?**

In most areas yes; it is no safeguard against complications. Very thin cannulas can behave like needles – hence gauges from 25G are preferred.
