A restless, dimpled chin when speaking ('orange-peel chin') or a deep horizontal crease between the lower lip and chin usually comes from an overactive chin muscle. Botulinum toxin relaxes it. Whether volume is also missing is decided at the examination.

## What is treated on the chin.

The **chin muscle (mentalis)** lifts the chin when speaking, swallowing and closing the lips. If it is overactive or the chin relatively small, the muscle fibres contract visibly – the skin looks **dimpled like an orange peel**. At the same time the **horizontal crease** between lower lip and chin deepens.

A small dose of **botulinum toxin** relaxes the muscle: the surface becomes smoother, the crease softer, and the chin often looks slightly longer. If volume is also missing or the chin is receding, a **combination with hyaluronic acid** can make sense.

Important: the mentalis is involved in closing the lips. So the dose is low and placement precise – too much can temporarily affect mouth closure.

## The treatment at a glance.

- **Duration:** approx. 10 minutes
- **Injections:** 1–2 points
- **Durability:** usually 3–5 months
- **Combination:** possible with hyaluronic acid

## Who it is for – and who it is not for.

**A good fit if …**
- expression lines that remain visible at rest (frown lines, forehead, crow's feet)
- healthy adults from 18 with realistic expectations
- medical reasons such as teeth grinding, heavy sweating or chronic migraine – after diagnosis

**Rather not if …**
- pregnancy or breastfeeding
- certain neuromuscular conditions or an infection in the treatment area
- a wish for volume or smoothing of deep static lines – hyaluronic acid is the better fit

The final assessment is made in the medical examination.

## How it works and aftercare.

**Before:** examination of the chin at rest, while speaking and closing the lips; consultation and information.

**During:** one or two small injections centrally into the chin muscle. The dose is deliberately low.

**After:** stay upright for four hours, don't rub; no sport or sauna for 24 hours. Check-up after about two weeks, then if appropriate a decision on a complementary hyaluronic acid treatment.

## Possible risks and contraindications.

Redness, swelling, tenderness or small bruises at the injection sites are possible, as are temporary headaches. Rarely, neighbouring muscles can be temporarily weakened – a drooping eyelid, for example – which resolves as the substance is broken down. The treatment is not suitable with certain neuromuscular conditions, infections in the treatment area, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding, among others. Botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine and is only used by a physician after examination and assessment of the indication. This information does not replace the medical consultation required by German law (§ 630e BGB). On the chin, too high a dose or unfavourable placement can temporarily affect lip closure, pronouncing certain sounds or drinking from a glass; this resolves as the substance is broken down.

## Frequently asked questions.

**Botox or hyaluronic acid for the chin?**

For a restless muscle and crease: botulinum toxin. For lacking projection or a receding chin: hyaluronic acid. Often both – the examination shows what matters most.

**Does the chin get longer?**

Visually often slightly, because the muscle no longer pulls the chin upwards. Real lengthening is only achieved with volume.

**How long does it last?**

Usually three to five months.

**Will it affect my speech?**

Not with correct, low dosing. Temporary effects on lip closure are rare and reversible.
